from Hymncharts arranger Don Chapman:

As Hymncharts approaches its 23rd birthday on March 6, I’ve now arranged my third version of this top 20, popular hymn!  I LOVE this one and did my best to capture that ambient, moody modern worship vibe. The hook here is the octave piano notes at the beginning which weave perfectly with the vocal melody.

How to Use Crown Him with Many Crowns in Your Worship Service

Try using Crown Him with Many Crowns in your worship set with these popular songs:

  • “King of Kings” shares the same royal proclamations as “Crown Him With Many Crowns” but wraps them in a modern package. Both songs stack verse upon verse declaring Christ’s sovereignty, separated only by time and musical style.
  • “Living Hope” zeroes in on the resurrection themes found in the third verse of “Crown Him.”
  • “All Hail King Jesus” (Bethel) reads like a 21st century rewrite of “Crown Him.” The songs share identical themes of Christ’s kingship and heavenly worship, making them natural companions in any worship set.
  • “Is He Worthy” flips the script on “Crown Him’s” direct statements about Christ’s majesty. Instead of declarations, it uses probing questions to lead worshippers to the same conclusion: Jesus alone deserves all glory and honor.

The Timeless Message of Crown Him with Many Crowns

This Victorian-era masterpiece wasn’t crafted by just one writer – it took three people to create what we sing today. Matthew Bridges kicked things off in 1851, Godfrey Thring added his spin in 1868, and Sir George Elvey wrapped it all up with that majestic tune DIADEMATA in 1874.

The brilliance lies in its perfect marriage of music and meaning. Elvey’s march-like melody carries Bridges’ and Thring’s soaring declarations of Christ’s majesty forward with unstoppable momentum. When congregations sing “Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne,” they participate in a century-and-a-half tradition of exalting the King of Kings.

The power of blending hymns and modern worship isn’t about checking boxes or appeasing different generations – it’s about creating a seamless tapestry of praise that transcends time. When Crown Him with Many Crowns flows naturally into today’s worship anthems we’re connecting our congregation to the timeless truth that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

The Victorian poets who penned these verses would likely be amazed to hear their words accompanied by synthesizers and electric guitars, but they’d recognize the heart of worship remains unchanged: exalting the King who deserves every crown we can lay at His feet.
