from Hymncharts arranger Don Chapman:
This top twenty hymn has been a cornerstone of Christian worship for centuries, and for good reason – its lyrics are as powerful and relevant today as they were when Robert Robinson penned them in 1758. I last arranged it way back in 2002 and felt it was time for a modern update!
“Come Thou Fount” makes an excellent call to worship. Starting your service by inviting the Lord to join us sets a powerful tone. The opening line, “Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace,” immediately focuses the congregation on God’s presence and our need for His grace.
While it’s common to start worship sets with upbeat songs, beginning with a slower tempo can be equally effective if used on occasion. This arrangement starts gently but gradually builds in intensity, reaching a powerful crescendo by the final verse. It serves as a spiritual warm-up for your congregation, preparing their hearts for worship.
Regarding the key, I’ve recorded this in D major, which will make tenor worship leaders happy! However, consider using it a step lower in C major, especially for early Sunday morning services. The lower key will help warm up your congregation’s voices and your own, making those higher songs in the rest of your set easier to sing.
After “Come Thou Fount,” you’ll want to maintain the worship momentum. Consider following it with popular upbeat songs like Wickham’s Great Things or Passion’s Even So Come.
